A macabre suspense thriller from the master of elegant mystery. A wealthy plastic surgeon (Banderas) tries out a skin substitute on a young woman who may or may not be his disfigured wife. The tangled plot is perhaps not the point: this is a Hitchcockian fantasy with Antonio Banderas as Almodóvar’s Cary Grant. It revisits most of the director’s provocative preoccupations – maternal devotion, sexual identity, obsessions. Cool, elegant and moving.
